Writing a Resume Headline

Last updated 2026-08-04

The headline is the short line directly beneath your name. It is optional, takes one line, and does two things unusually efficiently: it tells a human what you are, and it places your target job title high in the document where both readers and search tools look first.

A bullet that scores well has four parts. Most rejected bullets are missing the last two.

Headline versus summary

The headline is a label — three to eight words, no verb. The summary is two or three sentences of substance. They serve different functions and a strong resume can carry both.

What makes a good one

  • "Senior Frontend Engineer | React, TypeScript, Accessibility"
  • "Registered Nurse (BSN, CCRN) | Adult Telemetry & Step-Down"
  • "Financial Analyst | FP&A, Forecasting, $45M Transactions"
  • "Digital Marketing Manager | Paid Acquisition & Lifecycle"

What makes a bad one

  • "Hardworking professional seeking new opportunities" — no title, no specialty, no information.
  • "Visionary Leader & Change Agent" — unverifiable and matches no search.
  • "Looking for a job in tech" — states what you want rather than what you are.

Match the posting

Where your actual title and the posting's title differ but describe the same work, use the posting's wording. If you are a "Software Engineer II" applying for "Backend Developer", the headline is the natural place to bridge that — as long as it is honest.

Frequently asked questions

Is a headline necessary?
No, but it costs one line and does more per line than almost anything else on the page.
Can the headline differ from my actual job title?
The headline describes what you do and what you are targeting, not your exact payroll title. Your employment history must state your real title.
